In Loving Memory of Deirdre Cassedy Hitch

Obituary

Deirdre Cassedy Hitch
December 11, 1936 – November 7, 2019

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Deirdre, our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on November 7, 2019.

She left us peacefully after complications from a sudden illness. She was 82 years old. Married 51 years to her late husband Spencer Hitch and beloved mother of Sarah Hitch Burdi (Tom), Jordan Hitch (Julie) and Kelin Hitch Rapp (Steve). She cherished her role as Nana to Sam Burdi, Lindsay Burdi, Emma Hitch, Charlie Hitch, Tyler Hitch, Lily Hitch, Tom Rapp and Emma Rapp. She was dear sister of Gerard Cassedy (Kim) and the late Brian Cassedy (Joan) and remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Deirdre was born in New York City and grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. She attended Convent of the Scared Heart School in Greenwich, Connecticut and then graduated from St. Vincent's Nursing School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After working as an OR nurse in New York City Deirdre moved to Montreal and worked in the Cardiac Research Lab at McGill University. It was there that she met and married Spencer and moved to Darien, Connecticut. While raising her children, Deirdre went back to school for an Associate's Degree in Accounting at Norwalk Community College. She had her own successful bookkeeping business for many years. After retiring to Florida, she achieved her longtime goal of completing a 4-year college degree. At the age of 70, she proudly graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a BA in History. She was one of the University's oldest graduates.

During her time in Darien she was very involved with Darien EMS Post 53 – The mission of Post 53 is to provide emergency medical services to the Darien community using Darien High School students and adult volunteers. She had great passion for the organization and was so happy to be able to use her nursing background. As an EMT-IV, she served as an adult advisor and leader for over a decade, helping to train and mentor countless teens.

Deirdre was a voracious reader, an amazing cook and entertainer, and made friends everywhere she went. No matter where she lived, she would end up as the neighborhood social chair. Her passion for travel knew no bounds. From camping across the country at the age of 57, to crisscrossing Europe via train, boat, auto and bus tour, to spending time in Oaxaca Mexico, Deirdre travelled right up until her last trip to Germany a month before her death. We are grateful to her neighbors in the Meadows community for the friendship and support that she so cherished over the years.

Deirdre lived for friends, travel, adventure and great conversation. She suffered terribly after the loss of Spencer, her partner in crime, but in true Deirdre fashion she fearlessly pushed forward and tried to live life to the fullest with her classy spunk on full display.

No services are planned, but in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in her name to Post 53 at the address below, or online at www.post53.org
