Phoenicia-

Albert "Albie" Kirk of Phoenicia died suddenly Friday August 4, 2017 at TenBroeck Commons Rehabilitation Center in Lake Katrine. He was born April 17, 1933 in Phoenicia, son of the late George and Florence Buchanan Kirk. A native and life long area resident, he was raised in Phoenicia at his Dad's automotive garage. It was those early experiences that enable Albie to fix most anything mechanical, and to be a community-minded citizen. As a young adult, he was an athlete with the local Phoenicia Ball Team. Later, he coached the Giants Little League Team in Shandaken for many years. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Ulster County Highway Department for over 33 years, having retired in 1995. Albie had an appreciation for nature and the great outdoors, which allowed him to enjoy hunting and camping with his family. He was active with the Shandaken Senior Citizen. He was a devout Christian, who taught Sunday School, and had been Sunday School Superintendent at the Phoenicia Wesleyan Church where he was a long-time member. He was a veteran of the U S Navy serving on the USS Iowa in the European Theatre from 1953-56 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He has been described as dependable, practical, and community focused.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years Blanche Miller Kirk, a son Eric of VA, daughter Donna (Brian) Chase, sister Sherry Ostrander, and grandson Vincent. He was predeceased by his daughter Connie Kirk Betz, and siblings Joyce Adams, Lillian Burke, George and Wilber (Buster) Kirk.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Albert Kirk will be held on Monday at 3pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. Burial with military honors from the Phoenicia American legion Post #950 will be in the Shandaken Rural Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Shandaken Ambulance Squad. Friends will be received on Monday from 1 to 3pm prior to the service.
