Alfred Roy "Al" Sciacqua, born December 3, 1925, in Madera, California, passed away peacefully December 1, 2017. Al attended Lincoln Grammar School and Madera High School, where he excelled athletically, lettering in football, basketball, and track and field. Upon graduation from high school, Al entered the US Coast Guard, joining his four older brothers in serving his country during World War II. After achieving the rank of Quartermaster First Class and seeing action in the Pacific Theater, Al was discharged from the service at the end of WWII, and enrolled at Fresno State College. At Fresno State, Al played basketball and threw the shot put, discus, and javelin. He also met a beautiful coed, Nancy, whom he married in 1950.

Al graduated from Fresno State and became a coach and teacher. He was a dedicated educator, often driving a bus in the morning to pick up students in the rural areas of the valley to ensure they made it to school. He became the Vice Principal of McKinley Elementary, followed by the Principal of El Capitan Middle School.
The tall, strong, veteran and sixth child born to Italian immigrants at the precipice of the Great Depression eventually became Superintendent of the former McKinley-Roosevelt School District. He was, without a doubt, the embodiment of the American Dream.
Al spent his retirement, "saying it with music," performing standards at local retirement homes and in the New Wrinkles Showcase for more than a decade.

He is survived by his three children: Danny Sciacqua, of Visalia, Nanelle Davis, of Fresno, and Larry Sciacqua, of Santa Rosa, and their spouses; his six grandchildren: Carly, Jordan, Nicholas, Kyle, Tyler, and Alexis; two great-grandchildren with a third due soon; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friend and closest confidant, Mary Jane Cavanaugh-Fisch. Al is preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy; parents Cornelio and Amelia; and siblings John, Anne, Frank, Tony, Edith, and Birdie.

Graveside Service will be held at St. Peter's Cemetery
