Aliene G. Thornton, 80, of Martinsville, VA passed away March 1, 2017 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Virgilina, VA, February 22, 1937 to Allie P. and Ophelia V. Glascock.
Aliene was a graduate of Halifax County High School, held a Bachelor's degree from Longwood University, and a Master's degree from Radford University. She taught Kindergarten through 5th grade and the Enrichment Program in the Martinsville City Schools for over 30 years.
As a member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church, Aliene served as a Deacon, Librarian, Sunday School Teacher, Choir member, Knit Wits volunteer, Baptist Women's Mission Union member, and various other volunteer functions. She was an active member of the Virginia Torch Bearer Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for 58 years, as well as, a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Robert (Bobby) T. Thornton, Jr.; son, Robert (Rob) T. Thornton, III (Kelly) of Marietta, GA; daughter, Martha T. Smith (Jim) of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Taylor T. Basham, James E. Smith, Jr., Mary Carter Thornton, Peyton H. Smith, and Ransome T. Smith; great granddaughters, Reagan G. Basham and Finley S. Basham; sister, Joyce G. Lyon (John); and numerous beloved nephews, niece and cousins.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 3 at Chatham Heights Baptist Church from 6:00 to 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at Chatham Heights Baptist Church, Saturday, March 4 at 1:00pm, with Dr. Mike Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chatham Heights Baptist Church, 1235 Chatham Heights Road, Martinsville, VA 24112.
