Alonzo "Lonny" Stokes Esco - a 70 year-old native of Mobile and resident of Axis passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Mr. Esco, or "Coach" as he was affectionately known by his students, retired from the Mobile County Public School System after a career that lasted more than 37 years. He spent most of his career at Adams Middle School where he taught history and coached girls' basketball for over 20 years. He continued to teach as a substitute for several years after his retirement. He was well respected by his colleagues and students alike as a wonderful teacher and friend and will be remembered for his sweet and funny sense of humor and ability to cultivate a love of history in his students. He believed that "all children are good children." Mr. Esco also served in the Army National Guard for six years. He loved his coffee, coke, and television, enjoyed collecting books, and was an avid New Orleans Saints and Alabama fan.
