Loving Mother and Grandmother

Althea M. Walkington, age 97, of Ringwood, passed away in her home on Monday, August 14, 2017. Althea was born on July 28, 1920 and was the sixth child of nine children born to Edwin and Ida Benoy.
After Althea's mother died at age 40, leaving Edwin with nine children, Edwin moved his young family from Avoca, Wisconsin to a dairy farm on Howe Road in Greenwood Township, McHenry County, Illinois. It was at the one room Howe School that Althea and several of the young Benoy children received their elementary education before finishing their formal education at Woodstock High School where Althea graduated in the class of 1938.
In 1939 Althea married Paul Walkington and the young couple set up housekeeping in an apartment on the second story of Muzzy building in Paul's hometown of Ringwood. Paul was a carpenter and after service in the Navy in WWII, he built a modern ranch home in Ringwood across from the Methodist church and two doors down from the two room Ringwood School. Paul and Althea moved in to their new home in 1947 and it was here that they raised their four children and lived out the rest of their lives. The church, the school and the community quickly became the center of life for Paul, Althea and their children. Althea participated on every committee, event and project that happened in Ringwood between 1940 and 2008 with its community United Methodist Church being the center of the spiritual, social and community service that encompassed her life. For many years Althea was the leader of The Ringwood Sunshine Girls 4H club, teaching generations of area young women how to sew and do their needle work. Althea was one of the original members of The Citizens for Ringwood Organization which successfully petitioned the state legislature in Springfield to create legislation which allowed small communities of under 500 citizens to become incorporated, thus preventing larger nearby communities from annexing these small rural villages. Ringwood was incorporated in 1994 and Althea worked tirelessly knocking on doors and obtaining signatures on petitions promoting the referendum for incorporation.
Many knew Althea from her years of selling Dutch Maid clothing at home parties, and after her children were grown she worked as a clerk in the Ringwood Post Office, which was the local gathering spot for the latest news on what was happening in local government and the life of Ringwood's citizens.
After Paul retired in 1980 they followed their dream by building a cabin on Legend Lake near Shawano, Wisconsin. The cabin quickly became the gathering spot for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as Ringwood United Methodist Church picnics, Benoy family reunions, church high school youth groups seeking the adventure of white water rafting on the Wolf River and a large assortment of friends whom Althea was always inviting to spend a "weekend at the lake".
Althea is survived by her children, Jay (Jan) Walkington of Ringwood, Ida Mae (Clarence) Adams of Wonder Lake, Tom (Maya) Walkington of Lakeville, Minnesota and Lee Walkington of Aberdeen, North Carolina, her six grandchildren: Doug (Kim), Chad, Tanya and Lincoln (Courtney) Adams, Jolie (Steve) Galovich and Karen (Gary )McDowell and 11 great-grandchildren. Paul passed away in 2005 after he and Althea were married 67 years. Althea was the last surviving child of the nine Benoy siblings, being proceeded in death by her brothers: Darrel, Harry, Glen, Wilbur, Raymond and Alvin Benoy, and her two sisters: Alice (Vincent) Moan and Arlene (Ray) Wilcox.
Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, August 18, 2017 and will continue on Saturday, August 19, 2017 from 10am to 11am at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Dr., McHenry. Service will begin at 11am. Interment will be at Ringwood Cemetery.
