Amelia Reed Clarke

Winter Park - Amelia "Amy" (Reed) Clarke passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 16, 2017 at Mayflower Retirement Community where she lived since 2002. Amy was born in Green Lane, PA on December 9, 1921 and grew up in Philadelphia, PA. Upon graduation from Olney High School in 1939, she entered Temple University School of Nursing and completed her RN training in 1943. After two years of general duty nursing, she was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps and reported for duty at Saint Albans Naval Hospital, Queens, NY in April 1945. With the end of WWII, she was released from active duty in August 1946 and returned to general duty nursing in Philadelphia. In 1947, Amy married her husband of 67 years, Colonel Harry D. Clarke USMC (Ret). As a military spouse, she accompanied Harry and raised the family during assignments in NC, SC, VA, HI, and CA. Upon settling in Florida, Amy was employed by Burdines at Fashion Square Orlando for many years and volunteered for 30+ years as a "Pink Lady" at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. Noted for her social flair, she maintained a remarkable network of family, friends and acquaintances throughout her lifetime, enjoyed a good game of bridge, and traveled with Harry throughout the world. Amy was a proud alumnus of the Temple University School of Nursing and participated in the Harvard Medical School Nurses' Health Study for more than 30 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Winter Park.

Amy was predeceased by her husband, Colonel Harry D. Clarke USMC (Ret) and her parents, Francis and Florence (Lukens) Reed of Philadelphia, PA, brother Wallace L Reed and wife Anne of Philadelphia, PA; sister Cecelia R. Wallen and husband William of Northfield, NJ. She is survived by her son Scott Clarke and wife Carolyn of Oviedo, FL; son Captain Steven Clarke USN (Ret) and wife Janet of Virginia Beach, VA; son Craig Clarke of Sanford, NC; granddaughter Valerie Clarke and husband Paul Diaz of Maitland, FL; grandson Andrew Clarke of Oviedo, FL, grandson Christopher Clarke and wife Nicole of Ashburn, VA; granddaughter Kelly Harris and husband Justin of Powhatan, VA; great-grandson Paul (PJ) Diaz Jr; and great-granddaughter Riley Harris.

The family would like to thank the Mayflower Assisted Living Staff and Cornerstone Hospice for her care and support.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted from 2:30-4:00 pm, Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Mayflower Retirement Community, Standish Center, 1620 Mayflower Ct., Winter Park, Florida 32792. Phone: (407) 672-1620.

Interment, with full military honors, will be at Arlington National Cemetery, VA, at a future date to be determined.
