Anna Mae Birckhead Wood, 87, of Earlysville, Va., passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017.

She was born on February 15, 1930, in Baltimore, Md., to Robert Lee Birckhead and Addie Mae Shiflett Birckhead, who preceded her in death. Her husband, and love of her life, Oscar “Mike” Junior Wood, also preceded her in death on June 14, 2015, after nearly 66 years of marriage. Anna Mae was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Wanda Darlene Birckhead; a son-in-law, Larry “Pete” Wade; and a great-grandson, Hayden Patric Fisher.

She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Fisher and her husband, Mason, and Judy Wade; and one son, Michael Wood and his wife, Kathy, all of Earlysville. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Mason Fisher Jr. and his wife, Karen, Wendi Marshall and her husband, Shawn, Julie Williams and her husband, Todd, Lee Wade and his wife, Heather, Christina Wade and her friend, Chelsea Shull, and Christopher Wood and his fiancée, Kathleen Dougherty; as well as 12 great-grandchildren, and sweet little Anna, who is expected to be born any day. She is also survived by one sister, Bobbie Burruss and her husband, Randolph, also of Earlysville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She worked at Tuel Jewelers and US Instruments, which later became Stromberg Carlson. She stopped working outside of the home in 1969. In 1971, she became a grandmother for the first time, and in 1993 became a great-grandmother and she loved it. She was always there for her family, and filled her days with caring for her grandchildren.

She enjoyed the flower gardens her husband planted and tended for her until his passing, and then her son continued to care for them. She loved to read and did so up to a couple of weeks before her passing. She would knit scarves and sweaters for her family. As soon as she found out a new baby was expected, she would busy herself making baby blankets and little sweaters.

The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. David Nielsen and Dr. Timothy Williams, Dr. Sorin Laza and the staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville Health & Rehab, and Hospice of the Piedmont for their care. Many thanks to extended family and friends for all their thoughts and prayers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 15, 2017, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home. There will be a private graveside service on Monday, October 16, 2017, at 11 a.m., for the immediate family. Anna Mae will be laid to rest at the family cemetery, with Pastor David Allison officiating.
