In Loving Memory

Obituary

"A strong woman who loved, forgave, persevered, and laughed regardless of life's challenges."

Antwainette Hayes, known to family and friends as "Toni", passed away on February 2, 2019 at age 66, at Deanwood Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. A native of Washington D.C., Toni was born at Gallinger Hospital on March 3, 1952. She was the first child born to Martha Hayes and Henry Hayes. Her parents preceded her in death.

As Toni described it, she was "raised by an Angel. Her grandmother, Mamie Mitchell, raised Toni from an infant. They lived in NE Washington, D.C. Toni credits her grandmother with having "saved her life" and she thanked God daily for her Grandmother, who was blessed to have lived for 103 years. Toni also appreciated her Grandmother for the joyous reunion, at age 13, with her dear sister, Mary Lineene Beasley. Toni described this reunion as among the greatest joys she experienced in life.

Thoughtful and straight forward, Toni was always a "tell it like you see it" kind of person. She was also fun loving and wanted the world to know that she loved to dance. She never wanted to hear, as she described it, "crying music"; she'd say, "give me a beat to lift my spirit". For Toni, music was a ladder upon which the soul could ascend.

Toni attended Dunbar High School, was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and enjoyed a 21-year career at "People's Drugstore". Most important to Toni was that she mothered two sons: John Hayes, born on June 24, 1970 (he now resides in Rock Ford, Illinois); and Anthony Hayes, born on August 5, 1971 (he passed away at age 26 and Toni said she never recovered from the grief of the loss of her child). However, she managed life's challenges by asking "the Good Lord to keep her going every day and to not let her down". She was a believer who spoke to the lord every morning, noon and night.

Among the high-points in her life was becoming a shareholder and moving into her own cooperative apartment in SW Washington D.C. at St. James Mutual Homes, Inc. She always prayed for a home of her own and asked God to someday fulfill her dream. This was facilitated by her dear friends Mr. Haywood Dunaway and Mr. Louis Perrilloux whom she loved as if they were her family.

Antwainette is survived by her son John Hayes (Irene Hayes), her sister Mary Lineene Beasley, and her niece J'nelle Stewart, and several other dear relatives. Her friends Lucian Coleman and Brian Parsons also cared for her wellbeing during her illness.

The funeral for Antwainette Hayed Toni's will be held at 5:30 pm, on Monday, February 11 at Tri-State Funeral Home, 1505 Kenilworth Ave., NE, Washington, D.C. 20019, Reverend, Elder Dyan McCray-Peters officiating. She will be interred in Kilmarnock, VA.
