August "Gus" Battaglia, 91, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018. Born July 13, 1926, in Covington, KY, Gus was the son of John and Consetta (Corso) Battaglia. Preceded in death by a brother, Jack Battaglia and sister, Mary Jo Chalfant. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Juanita (Hall) Battaglia, 4 stepsons, Steve (Sherry) Hall, Jeff Hall, Tim (Angela) Hall, Chris (Judy) Hall, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Mike (Theresa) Battaglia, sister Pauline (John) Drerup, sister-in-law Bobbie Battaglia, and all of his nephews and nieces that he loved dearly. In his early years, Gus moved from Kentucky to Oxford, Ohio before settling in Dayton, Ohio. He worked in the family owned Wyoming Meat Market until joining the U.S. Army during WWII. After serving his country, he worked as a butcher for North Dayton Meats. Just this past November, Gus participated in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial as well as other Monuments and Memorials on The National Mall. Gus was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 500 and enjoyed playing cards with his Brother Knights. Gus cherished the time he spent with family and friends. He also loved spending time gardening and tending to the yard. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:30 A.M. at Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 P.M. Friday, January 5, 2018 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 830 Bowen St., Dayton. Burial will follow at Medway Cemetery.
