August Wendell Knoche, former Tempe Union High School Math teacher, passed away Friday March 27th at age 87. He was born in Fort Wayne, IN, son of William H and Nadine (Hull) Knoche, deceased. Attending school through high school in Fort Wayne and 2 years at Purdue University in Lafayette. He then moved to Phoenix, Arizona. He earned his BA degree in Education from Arizona State College in 1953 with his Masters following in 1958. Tempe Union High School was where he taught after graduation, retiring after 33 years.
While a student at Arizona State College, he met and married his wife, the former Betty Ruth Cannon in 1953.
He was active in the Shrine Bands, Mesa City Band, Sentimental Swing Band, as well as the Emmaus Community. Mr. Knoche was a member of Home Lodge F. & A. M. 342, in Fort Wayne, 32nd Degree Mason, the Scottish Rite and the El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix.
He was a lifelong Methodist, attending Simpson Methodist in Fort Wayne, Central United Methodist in Phoenix, Scottsdale Methodist, Tempe First Methodist, Christ Chapel, in Tempe, and for the last several years has been a member of Desert Foothills United Methodist Church in Ahwatukee.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years; sons William (Gail) of Colorado, David (Kathy deceased) and Robert of Showlow, and Jonathan (Teri) of Gilbert; daughters, Wendy Anderson (Larry), Kathy Marcus (Daniel), and Beth Schultz (Richard) all residing in the Valley; 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 4 nieces and 3 nephews.
In addition to his parents, his sister, Jayne Proctor predeceased him.
Friends are welcome to visit at Carr-Tenney Mortuary, 2621 S Rural Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282, on Wednesday evening between 5 and 8 pm with a Masonic service commencing at 7 pm.
Interment will be at Green Acres Cemetery.
All are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Sunday, April 12 at 2:30 pm, at Desert Foothills United Methodist Church, 2156 E Liberty Ln, Phoenix, AZ 85048 with Rev. Michael Kerr-Osman and Rev. Louie Lyon presiding.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Desert Foothills United Methodist Church or to the Shrine Children's Hospital.
