Austin Walter Olmsted, 72, of Apulia Station, went to his eternal rest on Tuesday, attended by his immediate family. He served in the US Air Force from1960 - 1968, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and then worked as a Field Service Technician for Tektronix, retiring after 32 years. He greatly enjoyed working as a Teaching Assistant for the LaFayette Central School District for the past 13 years, most recently with the Big Picture School.

Throughout his life Austin has been passionate about politics as well as church and youth ministry. For 40 years he has been involved in various Christian Ministries and local churches, including AWANA leadership and lay speaking. He most currently attended the House of Prayer in Fayetteville. Mr. Olmsted has also been active in the Conservative Party for over 35 years and in 1986 met then Vice-President George H. W. Bush and traveled with him on Air Force Two. For many years, he has been the Chairman of the Onondaga County Conservative Party and was also on the NY State Conservative Party Executive Committee.

Surviving are his beloved companion, Patricia Zangari of LaFayette; daughter, Dawn (William) Benson of Chicago, IL; son, Alan Olmsted of LaFayette; former wife, Nancy Olmsted of Mattydale; sister, Winnie Wlasiuk of Sidney Center; and brothers, Neal (Olivia) Olmsted of San Diego, CA and Ray Olmsted of Islip.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 2584 Field Lane at Route 20, LaFayette with a funeral service to immediately follow at 4 p.m. Interment with military honors will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Berry Road, Berwyn (LaFayette).
