Avis A. Dorough passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Avis was born in Crawford, Texas on August 11, 1925, to Lewis Layfette Anderson and Bessie Cagle Anderson.

She grew up in Crawford, Texas, graduating from Crawford High School. She retired from CP&L after 26 years of service. Avis was an active member of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church and an active member of The Order of Eastern Star. Avis has always sewed, crochet, read, cooked and played games. Avis made over 200 baby quilts for unwed mothers with St. Luke's UMW and helped sew for O.E.S. Nursing Home Project and Vista Care Hospice where she made lap robes, wheel chair bags, bibs, wash clothes and pillows.

She is preceded in death by her parents and 8 siblings.

Avis is survived by her husband, Pickett Dorough of 75 years of marriage; daughters, Dixie Baker (Larry) of Sandia, Texas, Doris Sigler (Dexter) of Cotulla, Texas; her 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to Dr. John Paul and Dr. John Edward Schultz for the excellent care they extended to Avis. The family also wants to thank Christus Hospice and Comfort Care Home.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life for Avis on Friday, December 29, 2017. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Dr. Bradley L. DeHaven from St. Luke's U.M.C. The burial will follow the service. All services will be held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home located at 8200 Old Brownsville Rd., Corpus Christi, TX 78415.

Honorary pallbearers will be her beloved grandsons and great-grandsons.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, First United Methodist Church in Cotulla, Texas or to The Order of The Eastern Star Aransas Pass #162.
