Barbara Ann Giese, 66, of Stafford, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Barbara was an avid golfer, a dedicated educator, a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. She was an elementary school teacher in Stafford County, with 31 years of service instructing second, fourth and fifth-graders at Rocky Run and Widewater Elementary Schools.
Barbara was born April 2, 1951, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. The daughter of Col. Edwin "Bud" Beers, U.S. Army, retired, and Emilie Beers, Barbara grew up in a true Army family, with homes across the country and around the globe.
Her experiences and love of travel would eventually take Barbara to all 50 states, where she soaked up local culture and satisfied her love for studying history. Barbara was a voracious reader and an enthusiastic student throughout her life.
Barbara settled in the Stafford area in 1979. She married her husband, Roger Giese, on Aug. 8, 1992, and they enjoyed adventures across the United States, visiting friends and family, golfing, or finding hidden treasures to explore.
New Symrna Beach, Florida, was a second home to Barbara and Roger, and she took a special interest in the sea turtles populating the oceans and beaches of Volusia County whenever the couple was in town.
For 31 years, Barbara was a true asset to Stafford County Schools. She had a hand in educating thousands of the county's second, fourth and fifth graders from 1986 until retiring in June, 2017.
Barbara earned her Bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College in 1986, and a Master's in Supervision and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her service to students extended well beyond the classroom. She was an active tutor and mentor. Barbara helped coach a local Destination of the Mind team, advancing to the state competition three times and the world competition in 2016.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Roger Giese; three children, Brandi Quirk (Brian), Josh Rice (Jennifer) and Justin Rice; a sister, Vicki Hennig (Randy); a brother, Donald Beers (Gale); three stepchildren, Steven Giese (Leann), Matthew Giese, and Allison Cutright; grandchildren Jeremy Rice, Blair Skinner, Tyler John Biging, Madison Giese, Abby Giese, Thomas Quirk, Jackson Rice, Jason Cutright, Dorothy Quirk, and Annelies Rice; nieces Kristin Creed (Tony) and Jennifer Scharnitzky (Andy); nephews Dan Hennig and Donald Hennig; and numerous other beloved family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin "Bud" and Emilie Beers, and a grandson, Carson Quirk.
A service is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 11 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Stafford, with a luncheon to follow at the church.
