Barbara Robbins, 77, Born Houston, TX, August 4, 1937 to Zelda and Morris Greenfield passed away peacefully Friday, February 20, 2015. Barbara grew up in Houston, part of a proud Jewish immigrant family, in a home rich with music, the arts, dancing, laughter and love.
Barbara attended San Jacinto High School and was introduced at the age of 17 to her husband Stephen on a blind date arranged by her future father-in-law, Myron. After seeing Steve's strong swimmer shoulders at the JCC pool, they were inseparable for the next 59 years. Barbara studied Library Science at Texas Women's University and pursued many interests as a lifelong learner.
Barbara especially enjoyed dancing, singing, quilting, gardening, and cooking. She was a master seamstress, avid musician, creative artist and imaginative actress. For over 40 years, Barbara actively participated in Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston performing as Chorister, costume coordinator and Board Member. As a member of Congregation Brith Shalom she managed the synagogue kitchen, performed in Follies productions, and volunteered in the choir.
Barbara's sense of humor brought sunshine into the lives of all she met and elevated the spirits of any occasion. As they raised three children, Barb and Steve's home provided a nucleus for an extended family to connect and celebrate life's traditions. Holiday feasts were festive occasions enjoyed by aunts, sisters and cousins "whom she reckoned up by dozens".
Barb looked forward to spirited annual vacations with family and friends to the Colorado mountains; taking in all of nature's grandeur by summer hiking and winter snow skiing. She and Steve later enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean and trips abroad.
Barbara is survived by her husband Stephen Robbins, their children Deborah Robbins (deceased), Ben and Jody Robbins, Shelley Robbins and Frances Ginn, grandchildren Sydney and Max Robbins, and her "brother" Chalermchai "Tu" Vibulyasek. Memorial Service 2pm Monday, February 23 at Congregation Brith Shalom, 4610 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, TX. Rabbi Ranon Teller and Cantor Lance Rhodes officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Congregation Brith Shalom or The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston, PO Box 741267, Houston, TX 77274.
