Beatrice Darby Barnes

August 6, 1925 – August 1, 2017

Beatrice (Bea) Barnes was - and still is - to her children, her many relatives, extended family, and friends a fiercely steadfast and loving lady. She inspired us and held us to the same standards she held for herself: love and respect for each other, truthfulness in actions, and continual development of a strong spiritual life.

Early in the morning on August 1, 2017, Beatrice Darby Barnes closed her eyes, bowed her head, and accepted the new life the Lord had prepared for her.

Her parents, Manila Moffett Darby and Roscoe Hamilton Darby, ensured that she grew to be a proud Laurel, Mississippi native, in a strong Christian family. On July 4, 1945, she married another proud Mississippi native, LeRoy Clarence Barnes and soon after moved to Yakima, Washington. Her primary occupation was as a home-maker; and the union produced seven children.

In the early 1960s, the family moved to Stockton, California where Mrs Barnes (also known as Mother Bea) became a lifelong member of Ebenezer AME Church. Avid and talented in the kitchen, she was known in the family and community for some of the most wonderful meals and always, always great homemade biscuits, cakes, and pies.

She fed and nourished our bodies and souls with equal energy and talent. Her influence and advice changed many lives for the better. If an extra hand or extra helping of love was required, Bea Barnes could be best and honest advocate and a fierce companion.

In addition to her home-making talents, she was active in Ebenezer AME, taking on roles in the Missionary Society and as a Steward and a Deaconess. For many years her vibrant alto voice helped anchor the Church choirs; she always sung at home which ensured that all her children enjoyed making joyful noises and good music.

Mrs Barnes will be remembered in the hearts and lives of her seven children: Doris Barnes Williams of San Francisco; Lawrence Clarence Barnes of San Jose; Lenora Barnes Alexander of Federal Way, Washington; James Elroy Barnes of Stockton; Timothy Eugene Barnes of Stockton; LeRoy Clarence Barnes, Jr of Killeen, Texas; Felicia Barnes Hodge of Tacoma, Washington; 2 brothers Edison Darby of Yakima, Washington and Carl L. Darby of Dayton, Ohio; a host of grand- and great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends; and her Ebenezer AME Church family.

Services will be held at DeYoung Shoreline Memorial, 7676 Shoreline Drive in Stockton: Visitation on August 8, 2017 between noon and 5pm; Memorial Service and Eulogy on August 9, 2017 at 10:00am. Mrs Barnes, widowed since 2001, will be interred along side her husband of 56 years; interment on August 9, 2017 at 1:30pm at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi, CA. Reverend Donnell O. Miles of Ebenezer AME Church will officiate.
