The word Solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), and so on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 on the Winter Solstice, our mom's heart stood still, holding the hands of her grandchildren, Kristian and Dana.

Berit Elise (Swenson) Baarsvik was born in Oslo, Norway on July 28,1926. She was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, spending her later years at Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Sigrid (Nielsen) Swenson, and was the sister of the late Per Swenson from Oslo.
"Bea" as she was known to all, immigrated to the United States from Norway in 1946. She was the loyal and dedicated dental assistant for over 30 years to the late Dr. Lee Philips, an oral surgeon. Bea will be remembered for her sense of humor, her persistent Norwegian accent, and as a loyal friend to all.

Her surviving family include her children, David Baarsvik of Falmouth, MA, and Dr. Robert Baarsvik and his partner, Irene Mahoney and her daughter Aubrie Brault of Fairhaven. Her family in Oslo include her beloved nieces, Trinne Mette Swenson, her husband Lars, and her children Otto and Lily, and Christine Swenson, and her partner, Stig Atle.

Bea's grandchildren include Kristian Baarsvik of St. Louis, MO, Dana Baarsvik and her boyfriend, John, of Providence, RI, and Maja and Brit Baarsvik of Falmouth. She has 2 great grandchildren, Ezariah Baarsvik and Haydenn Augusta of Falmouth.

Bea wished that her services be private and that she be cremated. Some of her cremains will be brought by her family to Oslo in May, 2016 to be joined with her beloved Norwegian family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Sippican Healthcare Center for their exemplary care of Bea and their kindness to her and her family.

Contributions may be made in Bea's name to The Sippican Healthcare Activities Center, 15 Mill St., Marion, MA, 02738, to continue their tremendous services to the residents there, or as Bea used to say to "all the elderly people here."
