Bernice E. Steffen, 88, of Harvard passed away October 3, 2016 in McHenry. Born March 3, 1928 in Chicago; she was the daughter of Einer C. and Edna (Anderson) Swanson. She married Edwin Steffen on December 26, 1970 in Marengo.
A long time McHenry county election judge, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aide and church choir.
Bernice enjoyed quilting, baking, crossword puzzles, playing Canasta, gardening, canning and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Edwin Steffen; children, Eric (Susan) Hanson, Brad (Lilli) Hanson and Laura (Jon) Aagesen; grandchildren, Graeme (Sarah) Hanson, Christopher (Trish) Hanson, Emilie Jackson, Joel (Kelly) Jackson, Ian Jackson, TJ (Tia) Aagesen, Jim Aagesen, Aaron Hanson, Katie (Jake) Knappmiller, Melissa (John) Russell, Alissa (Josh) Martinson, Kristen (Chris) Kranich and Valerie Hanson; great-grandchildren, Desi, Tommy, Niklas, Hannah, Sammy, Olivia, Noah, Josiah, Aliyah, Brennan, Cole, Emma and Evan.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jeff Hanson; sisters, June and Lois and brother, Bill.
Visitation 9 until 11 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, 412 Jackson Street, Marengo; with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Marengo City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Ladies Aide. Online condolences may be submitted at
