Bettye Jean Morris Gibson, 84, of Smithfield, passed away on November 11, 2017 in the peace of her own home with the love of her family.



Bettye was born in Wynne, Arkansas to Garnet and Alma Morris on February 3, 1933. She was the youngest of four siblings. She married her husband, Lawrence N. Gibson on May 21st.



She worked as a telephone operator in Great Falls, Montana; a doctor’s assistant in Suitland, Maryland; an admin clerk in the Johnston County Court House and a records keeps at Johnston Community Hospital. She also served the tough job of military spouse as she followed and supported her husband during his years in the military until he retired after serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.



Bettye is survived by loving husband, Lawrence N. Gibson, Sr.; sons, Larry Gibson and wife, Mary and David and wife Cindy; grandchildren, Josh Gibson and wife, April, Jeff Gower and wife, Penny, Chris Gower, Matthew Gibson, Jessie Gibson and husband, David, Maranda Whitley and husband, Duane, Candice Thompson, Angela Carroll and Brandy Carroll; 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.



She is preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Mary; her daughter, Judy Gibson; and siblings, Carl, Wayne and LaDell.

Funeral services will be held at 12pm on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at McLaurin Funeral Home 12830 US-70 Business Highway West, Clayton, NC 27520 with George Arant officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Knollwood Cemetery in Clayton, NC. Arrangements are by McLaurin Funeral Home.
