Vinton - Billy Burton West, age 76, went to his Eternal Home on Friday March 31, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
Billy was a native of Merryville and lived in Niblett's Bluff most of his life. He graduated from Vinton High School and later served in the US Army. He was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge where he was a secretary of the lodge for over 25 years. Billy was a longtime member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Vinton. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many who will be missed greatly.
In 1971, Billy fell out of a pecan tree while helping his neighbor gather pecans and injured his back, leaving him paralyzed from his waist down. This did not stop Billy West. Billy had a love for life and working on his farm, taking care of his animals and planting his garden which he shared with the community. He loved riding his tractor. Billy's will and drive was inspirational to everyone who knew him.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, and best friend for 37 years, Mable West; his loving stepchildren, a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, siblings, Larrie West, Bruce West and wife, Lurla Fae, and Curt West and wife, Marie; Mary Powell and husband, Phillip, Gwen Clark, Jan Vaclavik and husband, Terry; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Elva West, infant son, Grady Edward West, stepson, Charles Keele, and brothers, Dale West and LeRay West, and a baby brother, Randall West.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Crossroads Baptist Church in Vinton. Rev. Rob Tibbetts will officiate. Burial will follow in West Family Cemetery on Arledge Road in Vinton. Visitation will be 5-7 Monday and will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday until time of service.
