Obituary

Bonnie Jean (nee Beare) Schoeppel, of Aurora, formerly of Ellis Grove, IL, former administrative staff member for Aurora University and past President of the Board of Education for East Aurora District 131, went home to the Lord on October 25th due to complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Bonnie was born in Ellis Grove, IL on February 26, 1929 to Ollie E. (nee Fisher) and Ernie T. Beare, joining brothers Ernie Jr. and Robert. Ollie taught school, fostering Bonnie's lifelong love of learning and education. Bonnie graduated from Sparta Township High School around 1946 and attended MacMurray College for Women until June of 1948, when she married her high school sweetheart, Calvin Schoeppel, who had returned from his honorable service in the US Navy during World War II and began his successful studies in Engineering at the University of Illinois. Bonnie and Cal were inseparable from then until her passing.

Bonnie moved to Aurora in the 1950s, where she and Cal started their family of three children: Susan, Deborah and Mark. Bonnie involved herself deeply in the community, becoming an active member in the Aurora Women's Club where she raised money for college scholarships and other worthy causes. Bonnie's insatiable love of books led her to the Conimur Reading Circle, feeding her passion for history and politics. Spiritually, she was a devout Methodist and longtime member of Fourth Street United Methodist Church in Aurora.

In 1968, Bonnie was elected to the Board of Education for East Aurora School District 131, and in 1970 was named Board President, the first woman to hold that position. She served East Aurora well during difficult times of transition for the district. Her tenure lasted 11 years. Her prior public service included tenure as president of the East Aurora Council for Parent Education and Study Course, scholarship chairman for the East High PTA, parent education chairman for the Bardwell PTA and president of the East Aurora PTA Council.

After her time serving East Aurora, Bonnie worked as an administrative office manager for a prominent local dentist and later in the same role for Aurora University. She retired from Aurora University in 1987.

Bonnie's service to others extended far beyond her time in public office. She spent much of her time visiting friends who were homebound, taking them on outings and running errands for them. She was the neighbor others depended on to water plants and watch pets when they traveled, collect kids from the school bus when their parents ran late, and lend aid and assistance with an expertly stitched hem or hand-knitted baby booties, a plate of snickerdoodles, or a late night visit when relatives could not locate an elderly loved one. Bonnie was a source of patient kindness, of comfort in crisis, of sound wisdom offered only when asked. She was the embodiment of reason, intellect, and pure philanthropy.

Bonnie's loss leaves a deep hole in the community and the lives of all who have known her. She is survived by her husband, Calvin Schoeppel, brother Robert Beare; daughter Susan (Richard), daughter Debra, son Mark (Susan); grandchildren Allyson, Justin, April, Jonathan, Karyn, Mark and Katherine and great grandchild, Kaden.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Ernie, and one grandchild.

Visitation will be held on November 8, 2018 from 1 PM until time of service 3 PM at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl., Aurora, IL 60506.
