Boyd LaMarsh February 14, 1933- September 19, 2008 Boyd LaMarsh passed away on Friday, September 19, 2008 in the company of his wife and youngest daughter. Boyd was born in Alton, IL in 1933 to Leo and Cleo (Boyd) LaMarsh. Boyd graduated from Alton High School and later from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in Music Education. Boyd was a master trombone player and wrote and played the Processional March for the 1955 university commencement ceremony. As a home town product, Boyd became director for Alton High School's Marching 100 band from 1955 through 1967 receiving many honors and accolades including an invitation to perform at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO. Concurrently, Boyd also became proud dad to Karen (1958) and Kevin (1960), and earned his Master's degree in 1957 from University of Illinois. Boyd left Illinois in 1967 to pursue his doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He went on to become principal, and later, Director of the former Laboratory School, part of UNC, through 1973. During the summers, Boyd would spend his time in the Mountains at his modest, self-built Allenspark cabin. During this time he began to foster his love for the mountains through camping, hiking and snowmobiling. Later, he would spend a year working as a carpenter in the Estes Park and Allenspark area. In 1973, Boyd joined the public school system as superintendent in Hoehne, Colorado where he was awarded the first Colorado Department of Education and Equal Educational Services Unit Appreciation Award for his work with the school system. He spent seven years as Superintendent in Hoehne. In 1975 Boyd meet his wife Marilyn (Kuybida) and two children Rachel and Carolyn, whom he married and proudly adopted in 1976. In pursuit of a long-term dream, they broke ground on a new summer cabin in 1976 which become their permanent home in 1980. During this time, Boyd retired from Hoehne school district and became a stay-at-home dad and self-proclaimed mountaineer for 2 years, until purchasing and operating The Ferncliff Store in Allenspark from 1982-85. During this time, Boyd enjoyed serving as president of the Estes Park School Board from 1983-87 and conducting and playing in The Estes Park Village Band. In 1985, Boyd started his second career in the hospitality industry when he began working at The Aspen Lodge as Food and Beverage Manager and later General Manager until 2000. Boyd loved and gained his energy from the mountains and until the demise of his health, he spent free moments away from the Lodge hiking the trails of Rocky Mountain National Park often with his wife, charting and recording his experiences. He liked knowing about current affairs and badgering local, state and national politicians on issues he found important. He was a loving husband and father, and a dedicated grandfather. He is already greatly missed. Boyd is survived by wife Marilyn, daughters, Karen Leonhart of Fruita, Colorado, Rachel LaMarsh of Colorado, and Carolyn LaMarsh Thompson and husband Eric residing in The Netherlands, grandchildren Will, Tim, Sam and Sali Leonhart and Alanna and Marshall Thompson, and brother James LaMarsh and wife Sandy of Atlanta, Georgia, and mother-in-law Casey Kuybida of Greeley. He is preceded in death by his parents and son Kevin. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at The Aspen Lodge in the Long's Peak Room.
