C. David Oliphant, of Vernon, who taught at Rockville High School for 31 years, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. He was 92. Mr. Oliphant was born in Montclair, NJ in 1924, but the great depression drove his family to their farm in New Hampshire in 1931. There he attended grades 1 through 8 in a tiny one room school. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of New Hampshire where he received his BA degree in 1948 and where he met his wife-to-be, Joan Wainwright. They married in 1949, a marriage that lasted until her death in 2010. Mr. Oliphant began his teaching career at Lisbon, NH High School in 1948. He accepted a teaching position at Rockville High School in Vernon in 1954. He received his Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University in 1958. In 1973 he was named chairman of the English department at Rockville High, retiring in 1985. Mr. Oliphant's many interests included scale model railroading, home improvement projects, classical music, photography, and travel. He loved UCONN women's basketball. A very private man at home with his family and close friends, he was outgoing and entertaining in his classroom, which was his stage. There he touched the minds and hearts of countless students who adored him. Thanks to those who have acknowledged his life with their support and remembrances through social media. He is survived by his beloved sons, William W. Oliphant and his wife Millie of Vernon, Thomas W. Oliphant of Vernon, and David M. Oliphant and his wife Kathy of Richmond Hills, GA; two grandchildren, Cheryl Anne Oliphant of Beverly, MA, and Christopher William Oliphant and his wife Jill of St. Augustine, FL. His family would like to thank the Hartford Hospital Palliative Care Team whose compassion and care embraced them all, especially Carol, Dr. John, and Joy. Funeral services and burial will be private and at the convenience of his family. Memorial donations in David's memory may be made to the Rockville Public Library, Memorial Giving Program, P. O.
