Carrie "Callie" Wood Saenger

On Thursday, January 25, 2018, Carrie "Callie" (Wood) Saenger, beloved wife, mother, sister and Nana, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 years to join her husband of 65 years in heaven.

She leaves her children Kimberly Efurd (and her husband, Mike), Teri Laguarta (and her husband, Kirk), Keith Saenger (and his wife, DeAnna); her seven grandchildren, Justin Efurd (and his wife, Jamie), Katie Anderson (and her husband, Aaron), Sarah Miles (and her husband, Chase), Kyle Schoener, Lindsey Schoener, Ryan Saenger, and Blake Saenger; 7 great grandchildren, Allison Efurd, Cameron Anderson, Trevor Anderson, Callie Efurd, Logan Miles, Michael Miles, and Olivia Anderson; her sister, JoAnn Fritcher (and her husband, Edward); her brother, Douglas Wood; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Wood (wife of the late Frank Wood); and many close friends and relatives.

Born July 4, 1931 in the Beat Five area of Lee County, Texas, the daughter of William Connor and Myra (McClellan) Wood, was raised in Lee County, Texas, but spent much of her life as a resident of Houston, Texas.

After high school, she moved to Houston with her sister, Bess, and began working for Nabisco packaging cookies. After returning home for a dance in Giddings, she reconnected with Harry Saenger, for a long night of dancing that led to the two getting married in 1952 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. After the birth of their first child, Callie began her life-long passion of raising a family including three children, followed by her devotion as the matriarch over the entire Saenger family including many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Anyone that knew Callie would say she had an undeniably strong love and pride for her family, who meant the world to her. Whether it was baseball, basketball or football games, dance recitals, graduations, weddings, or any other special occasion or event involving her family, she would be there in full support. She also loved cooking and sewing and all of her grandchildren (and more recently, great grandchildren) have their favorite "Nana dish" that she would proudly make for them in a moment's notice. Along with her husband, Callie was a long-time member of Advent Lutheran Church.

Callie was preceded in death by her parents, William Connor and Myra Wood; her brother, Frank Wood; her sisters, Dorsie Griffith and Bess Smith; and, only thirteen days prior to her passing, her loving husband of 65 years, Harry Saenger.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 31 at 10:00am at Advent Lutheran Church, 5820 Pinemont Dr, Houston, TX 77092, followed by a burial service at 2:30pm at the Giddings City Cemetery in Giddings, Texas.

The Waltrip Funeral Home is located at 1415 Campbell Rd, Houston, TX 77055 however, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to Advent Lutheran Church.
