Carl Tignor went to be with the Lord on October 3, 2017. He was born May 27, 1924 in Richmond, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lucille Beasley Tignor. Carl was the youngest of 10 children and was predeceased by his mother Ida Belle Barnes Tignor, his father George Ryland Tignor, Sr., his six brothers Linwood, Clarence, Wilbur, Aubrey, George, and Joseph as well as his three sisters Berta, Mary, and Margaret.
Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1942, and was commissioned in August 1944, at the age of 20, as a Naval Aviator. He piloted the F 4-U Corsair over the Pacific and Japan during World War II. For his service, he received numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He received special recognition for taking down a kamikazi that was headed for the fleet, almost certain to have saved many lives. After World War II, Carl returned to Richmond where he fell in love with and married Lucille Anne Beasley on May 2, 1947. He was later recalled by the Navy to serve during the Korean War, where he piloted jets and also instructed new pilots.
In 1956, Carl and Lucille moved their family to Virginia Beach where Carl began his 24 year career as an air traffic controller at Norfolk Regional Airport. Loving to work with his hands, Carl also operated a small contracting business. He helped found Aragona Little League and coached there for many years. He also was scout leader for all three boys through their years in boy scouts. He enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball, coaching and pitching for church soft ball, bowling for years with the church bowling league as well as other sports.
Carl and Lucille were long time members of Haygood United Methodist Church and worshipped and honored their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, their entire lives. After Lucille's death, Carl joined London Bridge Baptist Church where he attended with his daughter and son-in-law.
It seemed as if grandchildren were what Carl and Lucille lived for. They loved attending baseball games, baseball games, and did I say baseball games, field hockey, dance recitals, school activities, graduations (high school and college), annual late fall camping trips, and annual snow ski trips with the whole family. They were and still are the very loved Pop and Mamaw Tignor!
Four years after Lucille's passing, Carl married Josie Hooper. She brought much joy to the remaining years of his life. They did some traveling, played a lot of dominoes, and Wii bowling. They also enjoyed watching and feeding birds, squirrels, and rabbits from their sunroom.
Carl was totally devoted to his family and doing for others. He is survived by his wife Josie; his children Carl Jr. (Terry), Steve (Rene), Dick (Nancy) and Donna (Joey); 14 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
Services for Carl will be Friday, October 6th at London Bridge Baptist Church, 2460 Potters Road in Virginia Beach. Visitation at 12:00pm followed by a service at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. You may offer your condolences at
