The young couple lived in San Jose and had two children, Terrie and Alton, Jr. (Chip). While in San Jose she was a housewife and was very active in her children's schooling and activities. She was a member of the Jaycettes, and loved to bowl and play tennis.

The Handleys moved to Santa Cruz and when the children became older, Carla went to work at Home Savings of America. At the time of her retirement in 1997 she was a Customer Service Manager.

Carla married David Montagner in July of 1992 and with the union not only did she gain a husband but, a daughter, Lisa. The Montagners lived in Fresno and Woodbridge, California before moving to Genoa in 2013, sharing the old family home in White Pines with their growing family.
