Carol R. Schell died on June 21, 2016 following a brief illness. She was 91 years old. Carol was born in Chicago on October 10, 1924 to Howard Ely Richardson and Henry Alcott Richardson. Her father was a Midwestern businessman. Her early schooling was in Milwaukee, Webster Groves, and South Bend, and she attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where she won the English Medal. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. While at DePauw she met her future husband Frank C. Schell, Jr., a US Navy lieutenant JG, who was teaching navigation to midshipmen at Notre Dame University during World War II. Carol and Frank were married in the Chapel at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on July 17, 1944. After Frank returned from service in the Pacific, they started their family in New York City and then moved to Evanston in 1949. Carol was a member of the Junior League of Evanston and Country Tennis. Her husband pursued a forty-five year career as a business executive with Chase Manhattan Bank, Quaker Oats Company and Babson Brothers Company. The family lived on the North Shore and in Barrington Hills. While on corporate assignments, Carol and Frank resided in East Aurora, New York and New Canaan, Connecticut, returning to the Near North of Chicago. For a decade they spent several months a year at their home in Dorset, Vermont. Following her husband's death in 2013, Carol moved to The Clare in Chicago. Carol was an avid reader of suspense novels, mysteries and all genres of escape literature. She excelled at needlepointing and at puzzles, and played the piano. She was a member of the Friday Club and the Arts Club of Chicago. A lifelong Episcopalian, she was a member of Christ Church, Winnetka. She is survived by her son Frank C. Schell III and his wife Joanne, of Chicago; her son Richardson W. Schell, of Kent, Connecticut; her granddaughters Sarah Alcott Anderson and her husband Ben, of Exeter, New Hampshire, and their children Aengus and Ariana; and by Christina Schell Pate and her husband Patrick, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and their children Rhodes and Jasmine. She is survived by her younger sister Nancy Mills, and her husband Gordon, of Lafayette, California, and their three children John, Pete and Charlotte. She was predeceased by her older sister Mary Alcott Scharbius. A great listener, Carol always gave great advice. She adored her family and many friends on the North Shore and in Chicago and elsewhere. She was devoted to Frank and Joanne's Cosmo, a West Highland White Terrier. She was lovingly known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Cow-wow. A Memorial Eucharist will be held for Carol on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 11 o'clock in Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Road, Winnetka, IL. Contributions in her memory may be made to Kent School, 1 Macedonia Road, Kent, CT 06757.
