Charles William "Charlie" Kitchen, born July 17, 1926 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, son of the late Karl K. and Lucille "Lucy" (nee Keynes) Kitchen, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Danbury Senior Living in Broadview Heights, Ohio. Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Mary Helen Kitchen (nee Applegate) in December 2019, and by his son Guy Kitchen in November 2012. He is survived by his son Kenneth K. Kitchen (Susan), his daughter Anne Campbell (Bruce), his daughter-in-law Jo Ann Kitchen, and 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Chuck, as he was called in his school years, was educated in the Cleveland Heights school system, belonged to Sons of the American Legion, Eagle Scouts, DeMolay, and attended Buckeye Boys State. He entered Western Reserve University, served briefly in the USAAF toward the end of World War II, graduated W.R.U. undergraduate in 1948, and from law school in 1950, receiving the Honor of Order of the Coif. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, President summer of 1947, and a member of Phi Delta Pi Law Fraternity.

While in law school he worked as a night librarian at the Cleveland Law Library, and after his father passed away in April 1949, also worked as a Law Clerk at his father's firm, Kitchen & Messner.

After graduation Charlie, as he was now being called, married Mary Helen Applegate on July 22, 1950 and began his career as a lawyer at Kitchen & Messner, later Kitchen, Deery & Barnhouse. He became partner in 1954, managing partner in 1972, and retired in 1997.

He was admitted to practice in the Ohio, U.S. District Northern District of Ohio, U.S. 6th Circuit and U.S. Supreme Courts. He defended product liability, malpractice and other civil lawsuits.

Charlie served on committees and Board of Directors of the then Cleveland, now Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, and was a member of the American Bar Association. He was President of the Cleveland Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, Inns of Court, American Arbitration Association, and a life member of the 8th Judicial Conference. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He was honored to have been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, The International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and Advocate of the American Board of Trial Attorneys.

In the community he was active in the field of alcoholism for over 53 years, serving, among memberothers, on the Regional Council on Alcoholism, Board of Scarborough House for Women Alcoholics, and Lawyers Assistance Committee.

Charlie and Mary traveled the world for over thirty years with Paris being their favorite destination. They also enjoyed golf first at Avon Oaks and then at Westwood Country Club. After retirement they lived for 9 years in Tucson, Arizona where they enjoyed hiking. Charlies was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

Charlie and Mary returned to Ohio in June 2007, where they lived in Fairlawn, and were members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, then members of The Bath Church, until July 2016 when they moved to Danbury Senior Living in Broadview Heights, Ohio.

A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at the BUSCH FUNERAL HOME, 7501 Ridge Road, Parma, on Saturday, November 14, 2020, where visitation will be from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, and Memorial Service at 1:00pm.
