Springfield, IL-Charles D. "Chuck" Helfer, 46, passed away at 11:09 am Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at St. John's Hospital after a sudden illness.
A lifelong resident of Springfield, Chuck was born March 23, 1971 the son of Rueben and Betsy (Stephens) Helfer. His father preceded him in death as well as a sister, Billie Jo Kramzar-Downey.
Chuck loved to socialize and be around people. He had a host of friends and business acquaintances from his sales career at both S&K Buick-GMC and Laketown Automotive. He and his longtime business partner and companion Deb Caffrey owned and operated Northern Lights Lounge in Springfield. Chuck prided himself with knowing every capital city of all 50 states, and would often ask family, friends and patrons to tell him the capital of a certain state. He would stump them when he asked the capital of Montana. Chuck was an avid and devoted Chicago Bears fan. He followed them for many years, and was a huge fan of Walter Payton. When it came to baseball, he turned his devotion to the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed a game of golf and found great pleasure and adventure in canoe trips on the Mulberry River in Arkansas.
Surviving are his mother, Betsy Kramzar, his brother, John (wife Jami) Stephens, his best friend, companion and business partner, Deb Caffrey, all of Springfield, as well as seven nieces; Kirsta (companion Baron Dodd) and Danyalle Downey, Breanna, Brooklyn(companion Jaquan Scribner) and Breigh Stephens, Katie (Zach Sirigano) Clinton and Samantha (fiancé Kevin Imhoff) Clenin, several aunts, uncles and cousins, and dear friends, mentors and confidantes, Brian "Pooh Bear" Wilder, Bob Nation and Jarrod and Jeremy Frost.
