Charles "Charlie" D. Gilmore, Jr., 85, of Culpeper, VA, passed away Wednesday August 23,2017 at the Hospice of the Piedmont Acute Care Center in Charlottesville, VA surrounded by his family. He was born January 8, 1932 to the late Charles D. and Peggy Allen Gilmore. His wife was the late Barbara Jean Gilmore.

He was also preceded in death by sisters Betty Blount and Donna Harrelson. He is survived by one daughter, Teresa G. Tyler and her husband Frederick L. "Les" Tyler of Madison, VA, a brother George Gilmore and wife Norma of Orange, VA, sisters Irma Jacobs and husband Wes of Culpeper, Susie Contaoi and Robert Dawley of Orange, VA, Sheila Childers and Martin of Pinewood, SC and Jeanne Pittman of Imlay City, Michigan.. Charlie is also survived by two nephews, Dwayne and Kelly Gilmore, and niece, Gina Gilmore that were more like sons and a daughter than nephews and a niece to him. Several cousins, nieces and nephews survive him.
His favorite past time was tending to his garden and to supply his neighbors and friends with an abundance of his fresh vegetables.

Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War where he received numerous distinguishing service medals. During his career as General Superintendent for CL Lewis of Lynchburg, VA he oversaw the construction of numerous buildings to include Daniel Technology Center, Culpeper 911 center, Culpeper Library, Providence Bible Church, Brandy Station Fire Hall, Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation and several schools, shopping centers and other commercial businesses in the Culpeper and surrounding areas. Upon his retirement he was approached by many construction companies to consult on projects.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 3pm to 6pm at Clore English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, VA 22701. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Clore English Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Albrant and Pastor Jeff Light officiating. Burial will follow at the Culpeper National Cemetery (new grounds).
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Place, Charlottesville, VA 22911 or Rose Park United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 124, Wolftown, VA 22748.
