Dr. Charles H. O'Neil 99, a well-known and beloved Keene Physician, passed away peacefully at the Cheshire Medical Center- Dartmouth Hitchcock, Keene on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 after a brief illness.

He was born at St. Joseph Hospital, Nashua, NH on November 21, 1917 the son of Charles H. and Sarah (McLaughlin) O'Neil, Sr.

He grew up in Nashua, NH, attended Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of Nashua High School. He graduated from the University of NH with a Bachelor of Science degree and graduated from Albany Medical College class of 1942. He served his internship at St. John's Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

He served honorably in the US Army under General George Patton in the 3rd Army Division as the Battalions aid surgeon and was honorably discharged as a Major in 1946. After serving in the Army he returned to the area and served as a rotating resident at St. John's Hospital and Providence Hospital for two years.

He started his practice in Keene, NH in July of 1948 as a general practitioner, doing deliveries, newborn care, Anesthesiology, and General Practice.

He served as President of the medical staff at the former Elliot Community Hospital and the Cheshire County Medical Society. He was a former member of the Keene Lions Club, the Keene Country Club, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 819 and the John F. Kennedy Fourth Degree Assembly. He was a communicant at St. Bernard's Church and served as an usher at the Church for more than fifty years. He was the recipient of the Granite State Award. He loved to play bridge and was an avid golfer and played every Thursday at the Keene Country for twenty-five years. He loved to spend time at the beach with his family, especially at the former Farragut Hotel in Rye, NH where he spent many summer vacations.

He married the love of his life, Winifred (Robinson) O'Neil on November 26, 1942 at St. Theresa's Church in Albany, NY. She died in May of 2012, just short of their seventieth wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Key of Woodstock, GA; three grandchildren, Beth Ann Hogan, Lisa Marie Carter, and Derek Charles Key; six great-grandchildren, Alexander and Sophia "Sia" Key, Isabel and Ella Carter and Kelsey and Molly; a brother, Thomas O'Neil; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, three sisters and a brother.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Bernard's Church, 185 Main Street, Keene, NH on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Msgr. Daniel O. Lamothe will be the celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
