Cherry Winona Minga Gleason left her earthly body and gained heavenly wings on January 28, 2018 at the age of 101 years old.
Cherry was born on August 13, 1916 in Abilene, Texas to Maggie and Eron Minga.
Cherry's family moved from Abilene to Littlefield, Texas when she was 12 years old. She graduated from Littlefield High School in 1934. She then attended Draughon's Business College in Abilene. She went to work for Camp Berkeley, an Army camp located southwest of Abilene during World War II. After the camp closed she worked for the Abilene Public Library, and a finance company that was on the first floor of the Grace Hotel. She retired in 1981 from the United States Post Office after 24 years of dedicated service.
Cherry married Lester Moore in 1948. They were married until his death in 1953.
While working for the post office, Cherry met and married Howard Torrey Gleason in 1967. Cherry and Howard loved to travel with their friends, watch baseball, square dance, and of course, play dominos. After 30 years of marriage, Howard preceded her in death in 1997.
In an interview by the Abilene Reporter News for her 100th birthday, Cherry said, "Get a job after retirement. Don't stay home and be a couch potato." Cherry began volunteering at the Abilene Public Library keeping records, and the Taylor County Historical Commission who presented her with the Perini Award in 2005 for outstanding service. She also volunteered for the Abilene Police Department's Granny Squad for 24 Years.
History and genealogy were one of Cherry's many passions. She has traced our family history back for centuries. She spent many hours helping put together the History of Callahan County in the book called "I Remember Callahan" which was published in 1986.
Cherry touched many lives during her years. From homemade birthday cards to teaching crochet, she always found a way to make everyone feel special.
Cherry was a beloved member of Potosi Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband Howard Gleason, 1 brother, Johnny Sparks, and 2 sisters, Gracy Blume and Louise Manuel.
She is survived by 3 sons, Terry Gleason and wife Bobalea of Potosi, H.T. Gleason and wife Marsha of Eula, and Robert Gleason and wife Carolyn of Tuscola. She has nine grandchildren, Zach Gleason, Kayla Williams, Chance Gleason, Laura Gwinn, Coby Gleason, Matt Gleason, Callie Southall, Jake Gleason, and Marleigh Gleason. Cherry also has 11 great grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Potosi Baptist Church with burial to follow in Potosi Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St.
