Chester Byron Smith ("Chet") April 22, 1919 ~ December 19, 2017 Chester Byron Smith, best known as "Chet," passed away peacefully on December 19, 2017, surrounded by his family in his Red Bluff home. Born April 22, 1919 in Big Spring, Texas, he was the fourth son out of seven siblings born to George Robert and Nollie Cornelia Heffington Smith. He was an 98 amazing years old. Chet met and married the love of his life, Evelyn Holley on December 11, 1938. They moved to Ft. Worth where he worked for Texas & Pacific Railroad. Chet was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served aboard the USS Garland, a minesweeper, in the Pacific Theater. After receiving an Honorable Discharge he returned to Ft. Worth. In 1957, Chet moved his family to California to join his brothers in several business opportunities. Eventually, he and Evelyn became owners of Chet's Chain Saw Shop in Antelope. In 1978 they retired and began their travelling adventures all across the United States and Mexico. Chet was a member of Tarrant Lodge No. 942 A.F. & A.M, Ft. Worth, Texas. In Red Bluff, he was Past Patron of Vesper Chapter 20 O.E.S. and a member of the Northern Lights Chapter O.E.S. and Ben Ali Temple Shriners. He loved camping, fishing, traveling with his wife, wood-working, and making pecan pies. His talents included playing harmonica and sharing silly songs with anyone who would listen. He was a great storyteller of both fact and fiction. He was preceded in death by Evelyn and brothers Lloyd, Clifton, JB, Chappo, and sister, Bernadene. Chet is survived by his three daughters: Janette Soncrant (Bill-deceased), Citrus Heights; Rosanne (Terry) Hansen, Forest Ranch; and Kay (Michael) Sowles, Stayton OR. Chet is also survived by his sister Nelda Utt and sister-in-law Muriel Smith. Grandchildren are Michael Soncrant, Nancy Soncrant, Mary (David) Rippetoe, Richard (Elizabeth) Kyle, Robert (Kathryn) Kyle, Anthony (Tonya) Sowles, and Patrick Sowles. Great Grandchildren are Christopher Soncrant, Alyssa (Corey) Michael, Jake (Sierra) Kyle, Brad Kyle, Samantha and Catherine Rippetoe, Jackson and Emma Sowles, and Zoe Helton. Services include the Viewing, Wednesday, December 27th from 4pm-8pm at the Hoyt-Cole Chapel on Walnut St. The funeral will be held Thursday December 28th at 1pm in the Chapel of the Flowers, followed by the burial, with Military Honors, at Oak Hill Cemetery. Reception will be in the Masonic Hall on Main St. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.
