COLUMBIA - Christine Hayward Estes, 70, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 27 from complications of long-term Type 1 diabetes.

She is survived by her daughter, Tara Kreh-Boyer and grandson, Maxwell Boyer both of Columbia; sisters, Cynthia Hayward (Peter Pleitner) of Ann Arbor, MI and Cecily (Jim Hastings) of Sacramento, CA; step-children, Tod Estes (Julie Haeger), Paul (Lori Estes), Bruce (Katy Estes), and Blair (Amy Estes). Also step-grandchildren, Trevor Estes, Haley Estes and Gabriel Estes, as well as and numerous old and new friends and neighbors from her years in Michigan and Columbia, who will miss her companionship, unfailing humor and gentle, caring spirit.

She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband, Patrick Estes.

Mrs. Estes was born in Washington, IN, the daughter of Virginia and James Hayward. She was a graduate of Delta College in Michigan. A life-long devoted Christian, she was an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church, as a much-loved member of the George Huggins Sunday School Class, the Thursday Women’s Bible Study, the Ola B. Taylor Circle and the United Methodist Women. She adored gardening and flowers, and enjoyed her friendships through her membership in the Columbia Rose Society and the Iris Garden Club, serving as 2017-18 president of the latter. She was also a generous contributor and supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street in Columbia, with a reception following in Player Hall. Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Shandon United Methodist Church.
