Cindy Ann (Martinez) Caplan, 63, of North Granby, beloved wife for 40 years of William Caplan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2017, surrounded by her family at her home. Born in Altoona, PA on November 11, 1953, daughter of W. William Martinez of Rutland, VT and the late Jane (Ghaner) Martinez, she was raised in Pennsylvania before moving to Montpelier and then Proctor, VT. After graduating from Proctor High School in 1971, Cindy continued her education at the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1974 as a registered nurse. Cindy and her family resided in Agawam, MA while she worked at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Continuing Care Nursery. In 1988 Bill's job brought them to Cape Girardeau, MO. While living in Missouri, Cindy worked as the nurse at the Charles C. Clippard Elementary School in Cape Girardeau where her children were enrolled. Ten years later the family returned to the Northeast and settled in North Granby. This move also brought Cindy back to her job in the NICU/CCN at Baystate. While there, Cindy loved her work caring for children and in her spare time volunteered to educate parents how to properly install and inspect their children's car seats. Her outreach extended beyond the hospital as Cindy held car seat education programs throughout the state of Massachusetts. Cindy found a great amount of enjoyment in her work at Baystate. Many of her closest colleagues and friends she had known since the beginning of her nursing career. Cindy touched countless lives and kept in close contact for many years with parents she had met while caring for their children in the NICU/CCN. Cindy also found much joy from her active membership of Christ Lutheran Church in Southwick, MA where she participated in Bible Studies and many other programs within the life of the church. Wherever Cindy went she made lifelong friendships. She enjoyed tending to her garden, biking, having lunch with friends, shopping for her granddaughter, and spending time with family and close friends. Besides her husband, William Caplan and her father, W. William Martinez, she leaves a daughter, Bethany Ciliberto and her husband James of Portland; a son, Benjamin Caplan of NY, NY; a brother, Dennis Martinez of Queensbury, NY; a sister, Dori Martinez of Lititz, PA; and her granddaughter whom she cherished, Ellison Ciliberto. Her family will receive friends on Friday, March 10, 5-8 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, 568 College Hwy, Southwick, MA 01077. In memory of her love and years of caring for children, Cindy's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Baystate Health Foundation, Inc., Attn: NICU/CCN, 280 Chestnut St., 6th Floor, Springfield, MA 01199.
