Clara Jo Tidwell passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 after a brief illness. She was 88 years old. Clara Jo was born in Taft, Texas on February 25, 1928 to Clara Bertha Bell (nee’ Aigner) and William Henry Bell. She graduated from high school in Taft, Texas in 1943. During World War II, she moved with her Mother to Washington, D.C. where they both worked as typists at the Pentagon (1943-1945). Clara Jo married Marvin “Skeeter” Tidwell in March 1948. They spent 57 years of dedicated marriage together until Skeeter’s death in 2005. Clara Jo was Skeeter’s primary caregiver for the last two years of his life. Clara Jo worked at Eastern Seed Company in Taft (1958–1971) as a bookkeeper. She also worked at the First National Bank of Taft as a bookkeeper (1962–1964). She later worked for the City of Taft as a tax assessor (1971–1977). She attended Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas and became a licensed realtor. She worked for Alfred Edge Company in Portland, Texas (1977–1978). She returned to banking as the Branch Manager at Lone Star Savings (later as Guardian Savings) in Robstown, Texas (1978–1993) until her retirement. Clara Jo was a member and Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Baptist Church Taft and attended services and enjoyed their fellowship her entire life. She also served in the offices of President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Taft Volunteer Fire Department. In her spare time she enjoyed craftwork, painting, square dancing, and most especially cooking for others.



Clara Jo’s parents and brother William H. Bell, Jr. predeceased her. She is survived by sister-in-law Ruby Hranicky and husband Roy Hranicky of Corpus Christi, Texas; sister-in-law Lola Curlee of Sinton, Texas; nephew John Curlee and wife Jane of Sinton, Texas; Chris and Brenda Curlee of Sinton, Texas; nephew John Elledge and wife Christi of Houston, Texas; nephew George Elledge and wife Carolyn of Houston, Texas; niece Lou Ann Mattison of Alaska; sister-in-law Mary Lee Bell of Pflugerville, Texas; and nephew Denis Joe Bell and wife Julie of Austin, Texas.



Special thanks are extended to Clara Jo’s caregivers, and to her close friends in Taft who assisted her. In particular: Roylene Hunt, Sharon West, and Cindy Dyer.



Visitation will be at Colonial Funeral Home – Taft, Texas, Thursday, December 15, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Taft, Texas, Friday, December 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at The Palms Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Portland, Texas.
