Claude Earl Richmond, 90, of Pennside, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2017 in Manor Care, Laureldale, Pa. Married to the love of his life on July 5, 1952, Claude was the husband of Josephine Rose (Tarantella) Richmond, who passed away on June 20, 2014.

Born at home on the farm in Cameron, West Virginia, on June 15, 1926, Claude was the oldest of 4 sons of the late Desmond and Mary (Logston) Richmond.

Claude graduated from Cameron High School, W. Va., Class of 1944. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as an Engineman, serving in Japan and China. One of Claude's favorite stories was how he never knew how to swim, but he was able to swim 50 yards in order to qualify for enlistment.

A hard working man all of his life, Claude started young: at age 7, he began driving the tractor at the farm in Cameron. At age 16, he began driving a truck for his father, Mr. Richmond, hauling cattle and coal mining supplies. A Hahn pipe-liner for 30 years, retiring at age 65 in 1992, Claude (and his son David) regaled listeners with stories of his time laying pipe all across Pennsylvania. Claude also worked at Shoenly's Greenhouse for three years and Spayd's Greenhouse for 15 years before finally retiring to take care of his wife, Josephine.

An avid gardener, Claude would eagerly await the planting season and could always be found inspecting new produce, watering the garden or sharing his produce on the bench in front of the house.

Claude is survived by his sons: Gary (and wife, Stacia) of Blandon; Keith of Mt. Gretna; and David (and wife, Robin) of Mechanicsburg. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, "Dolly"; his eldest son, Bruce Richmond; his sister, Betty Jackley; and his brothers, Nile and Dale Richmond.

Services will be held in Auman's, Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Road, Reading, (Exeter Township) on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. Friends and family are invited to view on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
