Claude Jenkins Hardin, Jr., 96, of Pontotoc, passed away on Sunday, June 4 in Pontotoc.

Claude was born in Pontotoc to Ida Weatherall and Claude Hardin, Sr., on October 27, 1920. Claude graduated from Pontotoc High School. He eloped and married Dot Russell on July 20, 1942, in Hernando, MS.

Claude and Dot moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he begain working on aircraft engines at Brookley Air Field. Claude was a skilled aeronautics engineer and enlisted in the US Army Air Corp during WWII in Hawaii where he maintained and operated the planes used in the war effort in the Pacific. He contnued to serve after the war in the Army Reserve.

After the war, Claude returned to Pontotoc and purchased his first business, Hardin's Auto Service Center, located on Main Street in Pontotoc.
Claude had a great knowledge of mechanical enginerring and shared that gift by teaching for 23 years at Itawamba Vo-Tech.
Claude operated a farm with cattle and sheep, in addition to many other business ventures.

Claude was a 65+ year member of the Pontotoc Masonic Lodge 81. He was a member of the York Rite and a Hamasa Shriner and a Charter Member of the Pontotoc County Shrine Club.

One of Claude's great passions in life was antique cars. After being an officer in the Memphis Antique Car Club for many years, Claude was instrumental in establishing the Mississippi Antique Car Club and served as their first President. He was a member of Mid-America Old Time Automobile Assocation and served as the Treasurer.

He was the longest standing member of Pontotoc First Baptist Church and a 5th generation member of the Pontotoc County pioneer family of Dr. James Ware. His great-great-great- grandfather, William Ware, is the only Revolutionary War Soldier buried in Pontotoc County.

Claude is surivied by his devoted wife of 75 years Dot Hardin, his daughters Regenia Bernstein (Ron) of Chicago, IL, and Cindy Powell (Fletcher) of Oxford, two granddaughters, Hardin Powell of Memphis, TN, and Sallie Russell Powell and her fiancee Alex McCall of Charlotte, NC. He also leave his brother Kenneth Hardin of Memphis, TN

Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday June, 6th at Pontotoc First Baptist Church with the service to follow at 2:00 pm. There will be a private burial for the immediate family. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is assisting the family.
