Claudia Harris Van Leeuwen
Salt Lake City, Utah
Our dearest Claudia Harris Van Leeuwen, passed away peacefully in her home on October 31, 2017. She was 82.
Claudia was born on July 2, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah to her parents Steve & Fern Harris. She graduated from South High School and later married her high school sweetheart Kenneth L. Van Leeuwen, on October 8, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Claudia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had a 15 year career with ZCMI but her top priority was her family. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she was a faithful member and served in various callings. Two of her favorites was serving in the Relief Society and Young Women's program. Claudia also had the opportunity to serve for 5 years as a service missionary at the LDS church office building and later served another 10 year service mission with her husband Kenneth at the LDS church conference center. Through those missions, many wonderful friendships were established.
Claudia also loved to sing. She was a member of a singing group the Salt Lake Harmony Singers for several years. She loved to sing and perform especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Claudia was a wonderful writer and speaker. She was often known as a "funeral speaker". She would often be called upon to speak at funerals by friends and family. She had the ability to share with others wonderful thoughts and memories in an eloquent way. It's only fitting that we share a portion of her own words in her own obituary.
"As I think about my life I realize I have no claim to fame but I have had success. I have raised a wonderful loving family. I have traveled to places I have only dreamed of, lived a full life and can move on to the next one with NO regrets. I have had second chances, witnessed some miracles and have come to know that if we trust in the Lord and allow Him to do His will, he will guide and direct our paths".
She is survived by her husband Kenneth, six children; Craig (Melody), Michael (Jackie), Melinda (Gary) Workman, Kent (Judi), Karen (Jerry) Hyde, and Chris (Melissa), 26 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren
The family would like to give special thanks to nurse Mindy Hutchison from Active Hospice, daughter in law nurse Jackie Van Leeuwen, her friend Pat Pinder, family friends, wonderful neighbors and friends from the Winder 10th ward who all showed much love and kindness to her especially thru the last 8 months of her life.
The family will receive friends at the Winder Stake Center, 4366 S. 1500 E. Salt Lake City, Ut 84124 on Monday, November 6th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Tuesday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral Services will follow at the same location on Tuesday, November 7th at 11:00am.
