Curtis L. Ray, 83, of 900 Charles Street, Galion, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at home surrounded by his family after failing health. Born Aug. 16, 1928 in Coulwood, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Matilda (Sykes) Ray. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Effie W. (Vance) Ray, whom he married Nov. 11, 1949. Curtis served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1946 to 1949 and with the U.S. Air Force in 1949. He enjoyed being with his family, fishing, camping, bee keeping, gardening, traveling and watching football. He was a member of the Pentecostal House of Faith in New Winchester. He retired in 1974 from Fisher Body Division of General Motors, Mansfield/Ontario Plant. Prior to that he worked for Kokosing Contractors in Fredericktown and in the coal mines in Buchanan, Va. In addition to his wife, Effie, he is also survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ross Hiatt, Angie and Chuck Caldwell, Patricia and Jerry Marshall and Sue and Ric Miller; two sons and daughters-in-law, Buzz and Mary Ray and Tom and Trudy Ray, all of Galion; eight grandchildren, Shawn Hall, Sherri (Ryan) Sheriff, Niki (Ryan Schroeder) Holt, Josh Ray, Curtis (Erica Jones) Ray, Chad Ray, Brooke (Jason) Harsh and Jessica Miller; ten great-grandchildren, Andy, Angelica, Allison, Laynee, Riley, Kaleb, Adlynne, Lydea, Miley and Holden; one sister, Anna Jean Combs of Lebanon, Va. and many nieces and nephews including two close nephews Ted Ray and Mack Ray. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Hubert Ray. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 18, 2012 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Apr. 19, 2012 with Pastor Wayne Harris officiating. Burial with full military graveside services will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Galion area veteran's organizations. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250 or to MedCentral Hospice, 335 Glessner Ave., Mansfield, Ohio 44903.
