Retired Teacher and Principal

Services for Dan C. Meacham will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Scooba United Methodist Church. The Reverend Jamie Bailey will officiate, Burial will be in the Scooba Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meacham, 86, of Scooba, died, surrounded by family and friends, Sunday night at his home after a prolonged illness.
He was born in Electric Mills, MS, the youngest child of John and Lota Cavitt Meacham. He graduated from Scooba Agricultural High School, East Mississippi Junior College, and Mississippi State University.
Dan retired after 40 years as teacher and Principle of public schools in Noxubee and Kemper Counties. He also was a farmer and cattleman.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the U.S. Air Force.
Dan was a leader in the community and county and served in the Lions Club, Cattleman Association, Retired Teachers Association, Cedar Lawn Cemetery Association, Kemper County Co-Op, and The Tri-County Industrial Board.
He had many friends and enjoyed fellowship with them in the Barbecue Club and the Okobosh Supper Club and the Scooba United Methodist Church.
In 2007, Scooba United Methodist Church honored him with a Dan Meacham Appreciation Day. This special day celebrated his faithfulness and dedication in such positions as Lay Leader and Sunday School Superintendent.
Dan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mattie Sue Gunn Meacham, daughter, Brenda and husband Danny Cherry. Also two granddaughters, April and husband, John McIlwain and their two children, Evan and Alex of Pelahatchie, and Susan and husband Wesley Stevens and son, Gunnar of Meridian; one brother, John Meacham, Jr. of Batesville, and 8 nieces and 1 nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Mitchell.
The family expresses special thanks to his Southern Care Hospice caregivers, Kathy Blanks and Johnnie Pearl Spencer and also to Dr. Rhonda Wilson and Staff.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Stevens, John McIlwain, Jim Irby, Joe Watson, Eddie Al Sparkman, Ben Dudley, Terry Cherry, and Kirk Knight, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Woodfin, Lance Mitchell, and Bob Parker.
Memorials may be given to the Scooba United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 56, Scooba, MS 39358 or to Alzheimer's Association of Mid Mississippi.
Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home and from 9:00 - 10:00 Wednesday at the church.
