Darrell Eugene Parsons, 68, of Rock Creek went to be with our Lord on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Raleigh General Hospital after a sudden illness.

Darrell was born in Republic, WV in Boone County to the late Clemon Parsons and Haley Maxine Drennen Parsons. The oldest of eight, he graduated in 1965 from Marsh Fork High School; where he played football and ran track. Following graduation, he joined the US Army in July, 1965. He served his country in Vietnam.

After returning home from Vietnam in 1967, Darrell met the love of his life, “Sally” Marilyn Joyce Combs. They were married on September 20, 1968 at his parents’ home in Arnett. The ceremony was by the late Rev. Byrd Cook. They recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.

Darrell was employed with Armco Steel in 1968 and continued with Peabody Coal and then Performance Coal until 1999, when he finally retired after 31 years as a coal miner.

A man with a heart of gold, a kind word for everyone he met, Darrell never met a stranger. He loved to make you laugh whether with a joke or making a funny face. His smile was infectious and will definitely be missed.

In his free time he loved to bowl, enjoyed watching WVU football, Carolina Panther football and Cincinnati Reds baseball along with playing card games, watching westerns, listening to bluegrass and gospel music.

Darrell was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Parsons, brother, Norman Parsons, mother-in-law, Laura Combs and father-in-law, Bert Combs, brother-in-law, Danny Dillon and sisters-in-law, Dedra Parsons and Lula Parsons.
