Obituary for David E. Bynum

David E. Bynum age 85 of Bratenahl passed away peacefully on June 13, 2021 after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. He received both his undergraduate and doctorate degrees from Harvard University. His Ph.D thesis was in South Slavic Studies specializing in oral narrative tradition from recordings made in Yugoslavia from singers or storytellers comparing them to the Homeric poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad. A linguist, Professor Bynum taught himself Ancient Greek to read Homer.

Professor Bynum has written many scholarly articles on oral narrative, as well as translations from Serbo-Croatian of oral heroic poetry collected in the field by him and his two predecessors at Harvard University.

He retired from Cleveland State University after 22 years.

David Bynum leaves his wife Grace, son Trevor (Tala) and grandsons Colin and Carson. A younger son, Evan passed away a few years ago..
