David J. Lantz Jr., 87, of East Stroudsburg, PA passed away peacefully on June 9, 2017 at LVH-Pocono.

He was born September 4, 1929 in Lafayette, New Jersey and was the son of the late David J. Lantz Sr. and Roberta (Longcor) Lantz.

David graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1947. He was a trumpet soloist and band president. He received his bachelor's degree from West Chester University and master's degree from Trenton State College.

Mr. Lantz served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a trumpeter with the 389th Army Band and 1st trumpet with the 16th Army Band.

Mr. Lantz was the original music teacher for the new West Morris Regional Board of Education in New Jersey. He founded music programs at West Morris, Mendham, and Mount Olive (NJ). Much later, he became supervisor of music for all 3 buildings. In addition, he served as a conductor for the Region 1 Jazz and Concert Band, and was one of the original 4 members voted into the West Morris Wall of Fame (1999).

Trained as a trumpet player, David was also known throughout the Pocono Resorts as a sought-after bass player. He performed in many small groups: Pocono Manor, Skytop, house bassist at Fred Waring's Shawnee Inn (1960-1969), bass player on many demo recordings for Shawnee press publishing, the new Sussex Symphony, Swingtime 16-member Dance Orchestra and trumpeter with Doug Smith's Dixieland All-Stars. He was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area District Hall of Fame in 2003.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara (Sweeney) Lantz, his devoted children: Leslie Lantz Beaumont (Kerry) of Coventry, England; David J. Lantz III ( Martha), of Sciota, PA; step-children: Brendan Sweeney West (Todd), of Shippensburg, PA; R. Bradley Sweeney (Jane), of Stroudsburg, PA; 13 adoring grandchildren: Trevor Corey, Jesse Beaumont, Victoria Beaumont, Holly Lantz Buckwalter, Amy Lantz Fowler , David Lantz IV, Emily Lantz, Abigail Lantz, Matthew West, Julianna Sweeney, Josephine Sweeney, Robert West, and Benjamin Sweeney; great-grandson: Jackson Buckwalter and another soon to arrive ; also many nieces and nephews. He loved them all dearly.

In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his sister: Lillian (Lantz) Melnick.

He loved nature, his animals, the farm, sowing seeds and watching them grow. He was on the board of Meals-on-Wheels for many years and loved delivery day with Roger.

Music, family, friends were his world .
