David "Fat Cat" Vernon Harrelson, age 70, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 24, 2015. "Fat Cat" coached football for the Stanley Optimist Club and High Shoals. He also owned and operated "The Fruit Stand" and "Fat Cat's Restaurant." He was a giving person who didn't like to see others in need; he would often give groceries to people on credit with no expectation of being paid.

He loved to tell jokes and stories about any subject and loved to make people laugh. David was known for many things but most importantly his family will remember that he was a loving father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents Everette Vernon Harrelson and Bettie Ruth Frye Harrelson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Those left to cherish the memories of "Fat Cat" are his two sons and daughters in law: Brent and Sabrina Harrelson of Mount Holly, North Carolina along with Adam and LeaAnne Harrelson of Stanley, North Carolina; his four granddaughters: Skylar, Bailey, Sasha and Tristan; his two grandsons: Will and Aiden; two sisters and brothers in law: Cathy and Ronald Kirkland along with Cindy and Donnie Lowe all of Stanley, North Carolina; his former wife, friend and mother of his sons and grandmother of their grandchildren: Judy Halperin and her husband Bob of Concord, North Carolina.
