COLUMBIA - Mr. David Wilson Thompson, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away on December 26, 2017. He was the son of the late Dr. Edgar Stinceon Thompson and Anna Schultz Thompson of Venice, Florida.

David was a graduate of Reynolds High School and The Citadel Class of 1948. He served in the United States Navy as an aviator and received 13 decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved all animals, especially his two Boston terrier dogs and foxes, which spurred his beloved family nickname of Grandfox. He was always active in the community, serving as a Scout Master and deacon in his church. David was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sara Hamrick Thompson, a daughter, Edith Black (Dan) of Columbia, a son E. Earle Thompson (Jean) of Dallas, Texas, five grandchildren, four great-grandsons, and two Boston terriers.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. The interment will be private. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
