Dean Devette Allen, 85, of Bryan, passed away peacefully at his home in Bryan on October 16th, 2017. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 PM, Thursday, October 19th at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. A celebration of Dean's life is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Friday, October 20th, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Interment will follow at Steep Hollow Cemetery, with full Military Honors. The family has asked Michael Allen to serve as a Honorary Pallbearer and Austin Allen, Anthony Malave, Dwight Malave, Joshua Kirby, Russell Kirby, and Jared Threadgill as the active Pallbearers.
Dean was born August 27th, 1932 in Proctor, Texas, the son of Ella Brooks and Leslie Allen. He grew up in Brownwood, Texas and joined the U.S. Navy shortly after he graduated. Dean served on several ships and worked his way through the ranks to Senior Chief Petty Officer, Gunners Mate. Senior Chief Allen was serving on the U.S.S. Chicago when he retired after 22 years of service in October of 1971. After retiring, he moved his family to Bryan and began a second career with GTE, where he worked for another 20 years before retiring.
Dean loved to fish, hunt and to read a good book. Most of all, he loved family gatherings at his homestead. We are feeling the loss of the patriarch of the family. Words fail to describe the enormity of the loss we feel, but also how proud we are to have him as our Dad, Grandpa, and Papa.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Mama and Papa Carnes, Mary Lee (Polk) Allen, Linda Fay (Norman) Allen; siblings, Scottie, Barbara, and Stewart; and a granddaughter, Stacy Renee.
Survivors include his children, Wayne and Diana Allen, James "Jim" Allen, and Desiree Allen; grandchildren, Michael and Lynn Allen, Michele and Dwight Malave, Russell and Miranda Kirby, Josh and Deb Kirby, Amanda DeLong, Sarah and Jeremy Hosch. He is also survived by Leah Ann and John Montgomery, Katina and DeWayne McCurry, Mike and Shelly Schwabe, Glen and Tammy Schwabe; and many grand and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Traditions Hospice, 1862 Rock Prairie Road, Suite #202, College Station, TX 77845.
The family would especially like to thank Sandy Santana for taking such great care of Dean and for being such a great support to our family. We would also like to thank hospice nurses Valerie and Peggy.
