Dennis Wayne Williams, 73, died February 22, 2017 at the Dallas VA Hospital following a brief illness.

Born April 23, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas, Dennis was the son of S.A. and Mary Rose (Barbee) Williams. His family resided in Sherman while his father served in the U.S. Navy and moved to Grand Prairie following his father's military discharge.

A 1961 graduate of Grand Prairie High School, Dennis excelled at football and was named to the 1961 All-District team. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy as an Ordnanceman assigned to Clarksville Base in Clarksville, Tennessee. Released early to accept a Tyler Junior College football scholarship, he played for TJC until automobile accident injuries forced him to focus on recovery.

After college, Dennis worked on the Alaskan Pipeline, served as a law enforcement officer with the Mesquite, Bonham, Gunter and Glen Rose police departments, was an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and then retired to his beloved Brazos River property.

An incredibly funny person, Dennis loved his family and family history, was a Mason and was an excellent marksman. He enjoyed current events and reading his newspaper, collected motorcycles and vintage automobiles, and always helped a stray animal. Loved by all who knew him, he will forever be missed.

Preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Dennis is survived by son Billy Joe Williams of Weatherford; daughter Michelle Traxler and husband Terry of Oakley, California; grandchildren Billy Joe Williams, Jr., Mason Williams, Julianne Wakefield and Chelsea Hardin; sister Lt. Col (retired) Barbara Williams Vogl (Class of 1958) and husband Mark of Gilmer; sister Judy Robinson (Class of 1969) and husband Rudy of Georgetown; one uncle; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A burial service will be held at the DFW National Cemetery, Mountain Creek Parkway, Grand Prairie, Texas at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017.
