Dolly Ellen Varner, age 81, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2016 in the home of her daughter, Tammie, under hospice care.
Dolly was born in Durbin, West Virginia to the late Charles and Margie Gragg on December 13, 1934. She married Frank Martin Varner on September 19, 1951 in Staunton. During her marriage she worked as a stay at home mom, at the White Way Laundry, and as a housekeeper/caregiver.
She was a member of the Staunton Salvation Army and had leadership positions in various programs including the Ladies Home League, Sunbeams and Sunday School. She is a Silver Star mother for her daughters' service in The Salvation Army.
In addition to her parent, she was preceded in death by her five brothers and sisters.
In addition to her husband, Dolly is survived by her children, Frank Varner Jr. (partner, Dorothy) of Staunton, Sandra Turner (Mark) of Chicago and Tammie Morris (late husband, Ricky) of Staunton; her grandchildren, Markus (Tasha) Lloyd of Stuarts Draft, Kyrstin Morris of Staunton, and Elizabeth and Bramwell Turner of Chicago; great grandchildren, Damian, Gabriel and Logan Lloyd and many other loved ones that she cared for over the years.
She loved taking care of other people, especially her husband. In her free time she enjoyed crafting, yard sale shopping and sewing.
A memorial service will take place at The Salvation Army, 1700 West Beverly Street in Staunton, VA on Tuesday, August 2,2016 at 6:00 p.m., Major Sam Hearn, pastor of The Salvation Army, will be officiating.
Flowers should be sent to The Salvation Army of Staunton, VA, and memorial contributions can be made to the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation (IBC Research Foundation, PO Box 2805, West Lafayette, IN 47996) in memory of Dolly Varner.
The family of Dolly wishes to give our sincere thanks to the third floor oncology nurses of Augusta Health, and Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah Valley for their care and compassion for Dolly.
