Donald E. Basden Sr. 80, of Hartford, Illinois passed away at 3:55 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra, Illinois. He was born October 3, 1933 in Ironton, Missouri, a son of the late Frank David and Mary Magdeline (Malone) Basden Sr. He married Anna Elizabeth "Betty" (McAnnaney) Basden on December 9, 1956 in Urbana, Illinois and she survives. He retired from S.I.U.E. after 18 years of dedicated service in grounds maintenance and also was an owner and operator of a janitorial business for over 20 years. The Korean War veteran proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy for 4 years and the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. He was a one of a kind proprietor, dabbling with many business ventures throughout his lifetime. He was always looking for that deal and knew how to wheel and deal with others. After retirement, he enjoyed his many years spent in Mission, Texas, loved buying and selling at flea markets, never lost his love of food and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He will be remembered for his love and special times shared with his family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by four children and their spouses, Jean and Mike Ragusa of South Roxana, Joanie and Billy Wallace of Edwardsville, Donald E. and Marcy Basden Jr. of Collinsville and Lisa and Mike Stahlhut of Alhambra; stepchildren and their spouses, Eddie and Linda Bodkins of Brighton, Keith and Hunter Bodkins of Belleville, Steve and Tammy Bodkins of Pontoon Beach and Howard and Tina Bodkins of Troy; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Frank "June Bug" Basden of Gillespie; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Bruce Bodkins; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Leona and Joe Huitt and Lucille and Raymond Jones; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Gladys Basden and a sister-in-law, Louise Basden. In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, Illinois on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Major Granger officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association and may be accepted at the funeral home.
